Self-aligning ball bearings

‌SKF self-aligning ball bearings are bearings with automatic centering function, suitable for situations where there is center offset between the shaft and the bearing seat or shaft bending. ‌

Structural features

The outer ring of the SKF self-aligning ball bearing has two raceways and is spherical, allowing the inner ring and the steel ball group to be automatically aligned. The inner ring has a raceway that matches the two raceways of the outer ring. The steel balls roll between the inner and outer rings to reduce friction. The cage evenly separates the steel balls to prevent them from contacting each other and ensure smooth operation. ‌

Application scenarios

This bearing is particularly suitable for situations where there is severe misalignment, shaft deflection or installation errors, such as spindles in the spinning process. They can withstand large radial loads and certain axial loads, and have a low friction coefficient, which helps reduce energy consumption and heat generation.

In addition, SKF self-aligning ball bearings are also suitable for applications that require high speed, high precision and reliable self-aligning performance.

Performance characteristics

Automatic alignment: The spherical raceway of the outer ring allows the inner ring and the steel ball group to automatically adjust when the shaft is slightly bent or installed incorrectly, maintaining smooth operation.

High load capacity: Able to withstand large radial loads and certain axial loads.

Low friction: With a low friction coefficient, it helps reduce energy consumption and heat generation.

Multiple designs: Open design, design with dust cover or seal ring are available to meet different application requirements.

SKF Self-Aligning Ball Bearings are versatile, high-performance bearings engineered to automatically compensate for shaft misalignment and housing inaccuracies, ensuring reliable operation in applications prone to deflection, vibration, or mounting errors. Featuring two rows of balls and a spherical outer ring raceway, these bearings combine self-aligning capability with low friction and moderate load capacity, making them ideal for machinery operating under dynamic or unpredictable conditions. SKF’s precision manufacturing and advanced material science deliver durability, energy efficiency, and reduced maintenance costs across industries such as agriculture, material handling, and automotive systems.

Key Features & Benefits of ‌SKF self-aligning ball bearings

  1. Self-Aligning Capability

Misalignment Compensation: Accommodates up to 3° of angular misalignment, mitigating issues caused by shaft deflection, thermal expansion, or improper installation.

Reduced Stress: Even load distribution across the spherical outer ring minimizes edge stresses, extending bearing and machinery lifespan.

  1. Low Friction & High-Speed Performance

Optimized Geometry: Precision-ground raceways and ball groups ensure smooth rotation, reducing heat generation and enabling speeds up to 20,000 RPM.

Energy Efficiency: Low torque requirements lower power consumption in motors and drives.

  1. Robust Load Handling

Radial Load Capacity: Suitable for moderate radial loads in applications like conveyor rollers or fans.

Axial Load Tolerance: Handles light axial loads in either direction, eliminating the need for additional thrust bearings in many setups.

  1. Durability in Harsh Environments

Premium Materials: Manufactured from chromium steel (SAE 52100) or corrosion-resistant stainless steel (AISI 440C).

Sealing Options: RS1 (rubber seals) or 2Z (steel shields) protect against dust, moisture, and contaminants in outdoor or industrial settings.

  1. Versatile Configurations

Open, Sealed, or Shielded Designs: Choose based on lubrication needs and environmental conditions.

Specialized Variants:

SKF Explorer® Series: Enhanced heat treatment for 30% longer service life.

Food-Grade Models: Stainless steel with NSF-approved lubricants for hygiene-sensitive industries.

  1. Simplified Maintenance

Pre-Lubricated Options: Greased with SKF LGHP 2 or LGMT 3 for extended service intervals.

Easy Mounting: Available with tapered bores or adapter sleeves for quick installation on shafts.

SKF Self-Aligning Ball Bearings are the go-to solution for machinery operating under misaligned or unpredictable conditions, offering a unique blend of flexibility, durability, and efficiency. From agricultural equipment to high-speed fans, their ability to compensate for shaft and housing errors ensures extended machinery life and reduced operational downtime. Backed by SKF’s global technical support and commitment to innovation, these bearings empower industries to achieve reliable performance while lowering total ownership costs.
